Meet The Family

Independent. Personal. Here From Start to Finish.

Our Story

Lumina Funerals was created with one simple belief: families deserve personal, honest and compassionate care when they need it most.

We are an independent funeral home based in Burnley, supporting families across East Lancashire. Being independent means the people you meet when you first contact us are the same people who will continue to care for you throughout the funeral.

At Lumina, your loved one remains in our care locally. We arrange the funeral, bring your loved one into our care, carry out their personal and mortuary care, welcome families into our Chapel of Rest and support you on the day of the funeral itself.

Our owner and Funeral Director, Sarah, is involved personally from beginning to end and can also lead the funeral service as Lumina's in-house celebrant if a family wishes.

There are no call centres, no being passed between departments and no pressure to make decisions quickly. Just a small, local team who will get to know your family and make sure the funeral feels right for the person you love

Compassion. Care. Clarity.

Your Personal Support Team

When you call Lumina, you'll speak directly to Sarah or Robert — not a call centre, not a stranger. Just genuine, compassionate support.

Sarah Bass

Sarah Bass

Owner, Funeral Director & In-House Celebrant

Sarah is the owner of Lumina Funerals and is personally involved in supporting families from the very first phone call through to the day of the funeral.

Her role is hands-on throughout. Sarah arranges funerals, brings people into Lumina's care, works within the mortuary, supports families during chapel visits and directs funerals on the day. As Lumina's in-house celebrant, she can also personally lead the funeral service for families who would like her to.

Sarah has worked as a celebrant since 2017, and her experience within funeral care has shaped the way Lumina works today — personal, straightforward and centred around each individual family.

For Sarah, being independent means being able to spend time with people, remain involved throughout and offer continuity of care rather than families dealing with different people at each stage.

Her own experience of bereavement has also had a significant influence on the way she supports families, giving her a deep understanding of just how important kindness, communication and the small details can be.

Outside of work, Sarah is a mum of five and is very proud of the family and team behind Lumina.

Poppy Davies

Poppy Davies

Apprentice Funeral Arranger

Poppy is part of the day-to-day team at Lumina and works closely alongside Sarah supporting families throughout the funeral arrangement process.

As an apprentice funeral arranger, she is developing her knowledge and experience across all areas of funeral care, including arranging funerals, supporting families, chapel visits and the practical organisation that goes into making sure everything runs smoothly.

Poppy is currently completing her funeral arranging qualification and continues to build her experience through hands-on work within Lumina.

Families will often meet or speak with Poppy during arrangements, and her calm, approachable manner makes her an important part of the support we provide.

She is also involved behind the scenes, helping coordinate the many small details that can make such a difference to a family during a difficult time.

Rob Bass

Rob is an important part of the practical side of Lumina and works closely alongside Sarah supporting families and caring for those who come into our care.

His role includes bringing people into Lumina's care, assisting with funeral services, acting as a bearer and helping with the day-to-day practical work that keeps everything running smoothly.

Rob is often part of the team families see on the day of a funeral and plays a key role behind the scenes too, helping make sure each service is carried out with dignity, care and attention to detail.

As Sarah's brother, Rob is also part of the family behind Lumina, which helps keep the business genuinely close-knit and personal.

Alan Bass

Hearse Driver & Funeral Operative

Alan is Sarah's dad and another important part of the family team at Lumina.

He supports the practical side of the funeral home, including bringing people into our care, driving the hearse and helping on funeral days to make sure everything runs smoothly and respectfully.

Families may meet Alan during a collection or see him on the day of the funeral, where his calm and dependable presence is a valued part of the team.

As part of the family behind Lumina, Alan helps us maintain the close-knit, personal approach that is so important to the way we work.

He is a valued part of Lumina's close-knit team and supports the high standard of care we aim to provide to every family.

Why Families Choose Lumina

At Lumina, we believe funeral care should feel personal, straightforward and genuinely supportive.

We are an independent funeral home, which means we can take the time to care for each family properly and tailor arrangements around the person who has died rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Families choosing Lumina benefit from:

  • Personal care from a small, familiar team
  • Your loved one being cared for locally at Lumina
  • 24-hour support when someone dies
  • Unlimited Chapel of Rest visits by appointment, with no additional charge
  • An in-house celebrant
  • Clear and transparent pricing
  • Local knowledge and local people supporting families across Burnley, Padiham, Nelson, Pendle, Accrington and East Lancashire

Most importantly, we never want families to feel rushed

We will explain your options clearly, give you time to make decisions and support you through every stage.
